laughThere’s no point in sending this to Gulf1.com – even though I answer all his questions. It’s obvious Mike West (“Dr. Wallace”) doesn’t want a real debate on the waterfront park, but I welcome his reply.

I do suggest all pro-park supporters to cut-and-paste these answers to your letters to West/Wallace so that your opinions will be posted on gulf1.com in the future.

* Of the cities you named above, how many have a working sewer plant less 100 yards from their development projects? Our research shows that few do. Although many were built in blighted areas and had some unique challenges.

* How many people do you think will go to a baseball game at the waterfront park on an evening when the breeze is blowing from the Main Street Sewer Plant? The stadium capacity is 3500 so that’s how many I think will go.

Based on your research, how many summer and spring nights does the breeze from the Main Street Sewer Plant blow southeasterly? Have you ever walked the propery at night? during the day even? Have you polled the owners of Port Royal? It doesn’t look like the plant is impacting their property values or resales.

* How many people do you think will attend a concert at the waterfront park on an evening when the breeze is blowing from the Main Street Sewer Plant? The stadium capacity is 3500 so that’s how many I think will go if that’s where the concert is held. I don’t know the capacity of the outdoor amphitheater, but let’s say 5,000.

Again based on your research, how many winter and fall nights does the breeze from the Main Street Sewer Plant blow southeasterly? What does your polling data show? Have you polled anyone who has been on the property on a daily basis?

The CMP plan has been discussed for two years – you’ve had ample time to accumulate data to prove whether there is a significant odor problem on the eastern edge of the property – especially given your emphasis on it.

* Do you really think that people will want to go swimming in Pensacola Bay where the Main Street Sewer main discharges? No, I don’t think anyone should swim in Pensacola Bay anywhere along the downtown Pensacola shore.

What impact does swimming really have on a multi-use stadium, amphitheater, maritime museum, conference center, office buildings, retail shops or restaurants? No one swims in the Alabama River in downtown Montgomery where their new ball park is built ($30 million, all public $$$).

* Do you know how much of the 1-1/2 mile water front will be available for the public, and how much will be restricted for UWF use? No. Do you? Have you asked UWF? It seems that they would the best ones to answer that question not casual readers of gulf1.com. Again I ask why is this important to answer before someone criticizes one of your viewpoints?

* If the vast majority of citizens of Escambia County are decidedly against spending over 280 million dollars to move the Main Street Sewer Plant, do you really think the plant will be move in the next 2 years? Please clarify. Are you suggesting that the “vast majority of Escambia County” won’t want the $280 million dollar to be spent on the relocation if the state and federal is paying most of it?

I can’t see them objecting to that. No one has ever believed the ECUA customers will pay the entire $280 million. I can send you the reports if it will help you better understand the financing issues on moving the plant.

So your “if” won’t happen – but if the State and Feds reneged on their commitments – and that is a big “if – My answer is no.

How about 5 years? SEE ABOVE The truth is more likely 10 years, if all! All the time the sewer plant continues to stymie the waterfront park projects.

No, the truth is the plant only stymies the waterfront if we let it. The fact is most of the Trillium property is across from City Hall and near Port Royal.

If you can solve the moving of the sewer plant first, then I will join you on the park. If you cannot then you are wasting your time.

It’s been solved. ECUA has the solution. It’s public record. They are moving slower than I like (Remember we’ve been writing about moving the plant since 2001), but they are getting it done. The whole community can’t be held in limbo based on your fears the wind might change direction any given night.

Mike, quit bullying your readers. Take your criticism like a man and open up the debate. Aren’t conservatives for free speech, too? If you have more questions, bring it on!

screamingRoger MacDonald tried to take “Dr. Wallace” AKA Mike West to task. Again his points fell on deaf ears – West doesn’t want anything to happen until the plant is moved so he makes up questions to avoid the criticism. (Be sure to read my note at the end)
2473 Maritime Park by Roger MacDonald

Boy, are you screwed up! How much will your personal taxes go up if the park is built? How will your taxes change if it isn’t built? The answer is the same – zippo. Do you think that Charleston, SC, Chattanooga, Greenville, SC, Montgomery, and Louisville are all stupid? Don’t you think that it’s interesting that they, and scores of other communities, have recently built downtown and/or waterfront developments that include baseball stadiums? Your negative campaign of innuendos and distortions is despicable.

Strong letter follows.

========

Dr. Wallace: I sure hope your strong letter answers these questions:

* Of the cities you named above, how many have a working sewer plant less 100 yards from their development projects?

* How many people do you think will go to a baseball game at the waterfront park on an evening when the breeze is blowing from the Main Street Sewer Plant?

* How many people do you think will attend a concert at the waterfront park on an evening when the breeze is blowing from the Main Street Sewer Plant?

RO NOTE: This is a real unique method of arguing. My 13 year old daughter tries to do the same thing. “I’m not going to talk about my homework – until you say I can go to the movie.”

West (“Dr. Wallace”) wants everyone to link the Community Maritime Park proposal to the  relocation of the Main Street Sewage Treatment plant. Why? ? Because HE believes the two are tied together. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks…

What’s sad is by doing so and then predicting it will take 10 years to move the ECUA plant, West wants Pensacola to stay in suspension for a decade.

(I hope I’m sending this to the appropriate email address at your site.
Apologies if it’s the wrong address, though I would appreciate it if you
would forward it to the correct address.)

I’m writing to confirm the bias of the Gulf1.com site. I submitted my
comments to the Gulf1.com web site (see the bottom-most email below).
However, the editor, Mr. Wallace, refused to post it to the site because I
would not answer HIS biased questions. The email chain below may be an
amusing read for you. It’s too bad that they’re labeling themselves as
“Northwest Florida’s Home on the Internet.”

Thanks for your time.

Mr. Wallace,

I came to your web site thinking it was a legitimate community web site, so
I posted my comments. Now that I’ve looked more closely, I can find no
articles that show any balance to the Waterfront Park issue. You ARE the
editor, right? Is part of your job to make sure that only one side of the
story is told? Given the complete lack of balance on the issue, I find it
hard to believe your statement, “Unlike the PNJ, your[s] is the only letter
we have not yet posted.” (If so, what is with all the missing ID’s at
http://www.gulf1.com/letters?)

So, you feel the need to compel me to answer YOUR questions on the topic
before posting my original comments below. Well, in your little domain, you
make the rules. Fortunately, I don’t have to play in your world, so don’t
hold your breath for those answers.

I have now setup my system to prevent access to your web site so that I
don’t accidentally go there thinking I’m looking at useful information. You
have wasted enough of my time, so goodbye and good riddance.

Headline: Waterfront Park FACTS, Please!

Article:

I, and I expect many other Pensacola residents, do not know whom to believe
in regard to the proposed Waterfront Park. I have been more or less on the
fence until recently, when I got a clear explanation of the situation from
proponents of the park. I am currently planning on voting “Yes”.

Now, I still may be able to be swayed if the Save Our City (SOC) group can
rebut the recently published statements by the pro-park group that explain
away all of the claims by SOC. Up until now, SOC’s statements have been
unclear, unorganized, and unbacked by proof. And no, none of the supposed
damning emails really support your point. By the way, is Mr. Donovan ever
going to respond to Mr. Outzen’s request for HIS emails? – Who is
withholding information now?

Yes, you hear a tone of bias in favor of the park, but it’s not unfounded.
Here’s a challenge for SOC: Please try to clearly and intelligently explain
your reasoning as to why the park should not be built as currently designed,
and please cite references backing up your claims against park proponents.

Thank you for your time.

Gulf1 pops the Weasel

August 28, 2006

Bsoc signGulf1.com is a pseudo-news website run by somebody name Wallace. It’s more a collection of columns, viewpoints and press releases….a more Right Wing version of this blog without the freedom of comments from the public.

Jeff “Marty called me a weasel” DeWeese tried to post a response to a Wallace editorial. However, Wallace added his own comments to DeWeese’s response.

The norm when you’re sent a letter to the editor or blog comment is to let the person have his/her say then respond. Not so on Gulf1.com – even though he says he’s unbiased.

Here is the letter from Deweese with Wallace’s editorial comments added:

436 Jeff DeWeese's letter
by Jeff DeWeese

Ref: http://www.gulf1.com/G1E/082506a.htm

I am having a hard time finding the FACTS in your editorial.

Your piece states “My response is considerably shorter and deals with FACTS and not Fantasy.”

Imagine….it is 2009 and a group of fourth grade students are entering the Jack H. Fetterman State of Florida Maritime Museum and Research Center construction area. Each student is issued his or her own hard hat because it is a state law that hard hats must be worn on construction sites.

I SEE NO FACTS IN THIS SECTION (If Mr. DeWeese believes that, the envisioned Maritime Museum can be constructed and in operation in 2 years, he is smoking grass instead of mowing it. Architectural and engineering studies have yet to be performed. The real fact is that until the sewer plant is moved no one will want to visit the property no mater what is there…. Wallace)

The construction site is all staked out and waiting for the foundation to be constructed. Off in the distance the seldom-used baseball stadium sits vacant, as is the case for the majority of the year.

NO FACTS HERE EITHER (The real fact is that until the sewer plant is moved no one will want to visit the property no mater what is there…. Wallace)

The breeze is gently blowing from the north and the Escambia County Utilities Authority’s Main Street sewer plant is getting a new sign over the door that now reads “Emerald Coast Utilities Authority. “ The sign is the only thing new. The stench is the same as it has been for the last 50 years. The fragrance of fresh sewage gently covers the work site like flies on feces.

STILL SEARCHING (One need only follow his nose…. Wallace)

The teacher of the class tells the children not to play in the top soil because it has not been approved for playing in by the Environmental Protection Agency. The instructor suggest that the students just imagine what the museum will look like in the distant future when the local governments finally figure out how to pay for the moving of the sewer plant. HMMMMM…will I find one FACT (Depends on weather the teacher is honest or not….. Wallace)

The young students wonder why their parents ever let them down by voting yes to approving the massive debt on the city of Pensacola. AS USUAL FOR FEAR MONGERS…NO FACTS AT ALL…BUT YOU CLAIM IN YOUR OPENING TO HAVE FACTS. VOTE YES PENSACOLA!

For what you know to be true, for what has been put down on paper, and what has been committed to by TRUTHFUL people, not those who cry facts and yet don’t have any to offer. Im sure you wont print this one either, Dr. Wallace.

(On the contrary, Jeff. Gulf1 is not the local biased media outlet. Your letter has been published and your emotional outrage noted. Fact: The current one sided proposal sounds alluring, but until the citizen of Escambia County decide to spend the $280,000,000 to relocate the Main Street Sewer plant the Waterfront Park will only be a smelly piece of land.)

_______________________________________________

RO editorial note: Most of the park will be closer to Port Royal than the Main Street Sewage Treatment Plant. I haven’t notice the plant hurting sales of Port Royal property or a major evacuation of their $1 million-plus units. Have you, Mr. Wallace?
