Pluto no longer planet….Touart is

August 25, 2006

coffeeThe International Astronomical Union has voted that Pluto is not a planet. Since 1930, we considered the small hunk of something our eighth planet.

Apparently it doesn’t meet the new rules:

  • must orbit the sun,
  • be large enough to assume a nearly round shape,
  • must “clear the neighborhood around its orbit.”

Of course this means that Escambia County Administrator George Touart does qualify to be one.

In other news, SOC is organizing a petition drive for a referendum to overturn the IAU vote – “We can build a better solar system”.
