Fetterman Night Success
July 30, 2006
The Pensacola Pelicans’ Tribute to Adm. Jack Fetterman was a tremendous success. Jack & Nancy’s son threw out the first pitch. It was my privilege to present Nancy Fetterman with a special plaque honoring both his and her contributions to the City between the third and fourth innings.
Nancy surprised Pelican owner Quint Studer with a LA Dodgers’ uniform (with “Fetterman” on back of the jersey) that then-Manager Tommy Lasorda had given Jack. It was a special moment. Quint told Nancy and the crowd he intended to display the uniform in the Fetterman Maritime Museum.
The Pensacola City Council – Mike DeSorbo, Mike Wiggins, John Jeralds, Ronald Townsend, Mayor John Fogg and City Manager Tom Bonfield were all there with their friends and family. Townsend led the crowd in “Take me out to the ball game” during the 7 inning stretch. It provided me a chance to discuss issues in a relaxed atmosphere.
Don Shugart (WEAR TV3 sports director) did the play-by-play for the Pelicans on AM1620. Both Fogg and I took turns doing some of the color commentary in the booth.
The crowd cheered at every mention of the Community Maritime Park.
The Fort Worth Cats won the game in the late innings — FYI: The division leading FW Cats have a downtown baseball park that is very successful.
