SOC Mythbuster: Outdoor concerts work

July 21, 2006

snoozeA canon of the Save (Stop?) Our City cult is that no bands play outdoor concerts. If they do, nobody will attend.  Port Royal resident and the #1 backer of SOC – Bill Smart – has said no concerts will ever be held in the new baseball park…ever.

Of course, the facts don’t agree.

Look at the new Wharf @ Orange Beach – it’s an outdoor amphitheater. It is hosting The 2006 Pepsi Star Series features Hank Williams, Jr., Montgomery Gentry, Billy Currington, Train, John Kay & Steppenwolf, The Grass Roots, The Marshall Tucker Band, Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, Atlanta Rhythm Section and The Georgia Satellites.

Charlie, Bill and Marty, these bands might not be your favorites, but the concerts are doing well. There is no reason why they couldn’t play Orange Beach one night and the Community Maritime Park the next.

The Independent News is looking to host a Friday afternoon concert series at the new park that will feature only local bands.

Concerts will work.

It’s odd that you plug The Wharf here, but not in the weekly. Only by the PNJ did I know that LRB played there last night.

    I’ll fix that asap.
