Judge Collier & CMP talk

June 26, 2006

CMP view           Judge Lacey Collier has expressed interest in taking Vince Whibbs’ place on the Community Maritime Park board of trustees.

Also, Jimmy Buffet is discussing the possibility of opening a “Cheeseburger in Paradise” restaurant in the park.

The current Pelicans team is attracting an average paid crowd of 1,645 at a small, out-of- the-way baseball park that has few amenities. The new park will seat 3500. It’s not very difficult to see the team attracting 1000-1500 more fans by moving downtown on the waterfront. There will be 50,000-60,000 people living within five to ten miles of the park – 30,000 alone in south Santa Rosa County. The tickets are less than the cost of a movie. We making this seem harder than it really is.

What bothers me about the park proponents (and for what it’s worth, I’m actually in favor of the park) are the rumors being tossed about what might happen if the park is built. Sure, Jimmy Buffett might open a restaurant, but he might not either. There may be hoteliers eyeing nearby sites (from http://www.propensacola.com) to develop, but maybe that won’t happen. Why stop there? Why not say Disney might build a theme park on the sewer plant property after it’s moved – after all, it could happen, right?
We know instinctively that the downtown area develops further if the park is built and the sewer plant is removed, but those extra developments shouldn’t be assumed by the public as a done deal if these projects go forward. The projects are either the right thing to do based on their own merit or they aren’t. Just a thought…

I understand where you’re coming from, but it does help to see who is interested in the park. The Buffet rumor was confirmed by separate sources.
