Escambia County Campaign Team

Ritchie and McClure to head up local effort

Pensacola, FL – The Rod Smith for Governor Campaign has announced its Escambia County campaign leadership today. Smith’s local team will be led by former State Representative and Florida Teacher of the Year Dee Dee Ritchie, and local community leader Howard McClure.

“Around here we know a winner and a straight shooter when we find one, and we've sure found one in Rod Smith. He'll be a governor who will bring real change to Tallahassee” said Howard McClure.

Rod Smith has a unique understanding of the issues affecting North Florida. As State Attorney or State Senator, he has served in districts representing 11 North Florida counties. A champion of Florida’s small counties in the Florida Senate, Sen. Smith has served as Chairman of the Senate Agriculture committee, won funding for small county courthouses, and is a member of the Small County Coalition.

Smith moved from Oklahoma to Palm Beach County at the age of two. There he grew up working in the fields alongside his father, a truck farmer. He graduated from the public schools in Palm Beach County and then earned a BA from the University of Tulsa and a law degree from the University of Florida. He and his wife Dee Dee have been married 23 years and live in Alachua.

As a two-term State Attorney from the Gainesville area, Smith successfully prosecuted some of Florida's most dangerous criminals, including the Gainesville student murderer. He also led efforts to protect the environment by creating one of Florida's first environmental crime task force units. And he has been a leader in strengthening Florida's war against crime, establishing one of the state's first special prosecution units devoted exclusively to prosecuting crimes against women and children.

According to Dee Dee Ritchie, “Rod Smith is the one Democrat who can win in North Florida and I’m proud to be part of his team.”

“I am honored to have the support of such distinguished leaders,” said Sen. Smith. “Having lived in and represented North Florida for so many years, I understand the issues, and as Governor I will work to preserve this way of life.”

The Smith Campaign also announced the appointment of local businessman Todd McWaters, as Northwest Florida Field Director for the Rod Smith for Governor 2006 campaign. Mr. McWaters is a life long resident of the Panhandle area, having lived in Panama City, Ft. Walton Beach, Navarre, Milton and currently, Pensacola. He will represent the Smith campaign throughout Northwest Florida and will be actively involved in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Washington, Holmes and Bay Counties.

The Democratic primary election will be held September 5.
