Where are the Democrat leaders?

September 3, 2005

Democrats, here’s your chance. Pres. Bush and his administration have blown it with their slow, inept response to Hurricane Katrina.

Where are you? You claim to be the party for the common man. It’s time you prove you can lead in a crisis.

Bush’s press conference was a joke….little more than a photo for Miss. Gov. Barber and Ala. Gov. Riley. Yet no one has spoken up from the Democrat side.

Howard Dean, John Edwards, John Kerry, etc need to be leading convoys of food and supplies to Miss & La. They need to find shelter for the evacuees. Moveon.org has done a lot, but very little from the Democrat Party.

Why?

As a Democrat, I’ve long since given up on our national leaders’ ability to gracefully assert leadership on an issue like this. Instead, what we’ve seen is the predictable, harsh whining that leads most folks to say, “Thank God they’re not in charge.”

Further, I think when all of this shakes out, there’s going to be a lot of culpability on the part of the New Orleans mayor and the Louisiana governor as well. It’s hard for me to believe they had all their ducks in a row and the feds simply didn’t respond. When all of this shakes out, my guess is we’ll find that their plans looked better on the chalkboard than they did in practice.
